The basic substance of hair is keratin, a strong protein that also makes nails. We lose our hair as each one comes to the end of its natural life – from between two and seven years. When this happen, the hair becomes detached from the follicle and a new hair begins to grow in its place.
This should happen almost instantaneously, but with ill-health, malnutrition, tension or stress, the time taken between a hair being lost and a new one starting to grow can extend and as a result our hair begins to thin.
The condition of the hair is affected by what we eat, and by what we put on our hair. What we need for our hair is the same as what we need for the skin, the outer layer of which is also keratin.
However, what we put on our hair is usually a chemical cocktail.
Many shampoos have a foaming agent added to them to get the frothy lather we know and love. The most commonly used foaming agents are cocamide DEA, MEA or TEA. These particular chemicals serve no purpose other than to make shampoo thick and foamy. Other commonly used toxins are Sodium C14-16 and Olefin Sulfate, petroleum derivatives which are used as wetting agents. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Cetyl Sulfate, and Sodium Laureth Sulfate are the other synthetics popularly used in shampoo as they make substances lather.
Most shampoo lather is artificially created because of customer demand, not because it is needed for cleaning, and the result is that we end up smearing more toxins onto our bodies than is healthy, all for the misconception of being cleaner. Studies have indicated that with use, it causes all types of allergic reactions, hair loss, dry flaky scalp as well as skin rashes.
Some natural products also contain synthetics which are dubious. For example, Lauramide Dea, part natural but also part synthetic is used to build up a lather. It is not only drying to the scalp but can also cause scalp itching and dermatitis.
Oleyl Betaine is a synthetic used to reduce static, but it causes dandruff, dry hair and scalp and is also toxic when absorbed by the skin.
So what can be done……
